Digital Divide
Digital divide is a social inequality according to categories of persons in a population in their access to use of, knowledge of information and communication technologies. This happens because of the progress and upgrading of new technologies in different times. Because of poverty and the economic needs, these gives the people to prevent obtaining or using newer technologies but this is not an issue to deal with because we can still access on different media for a reliable information but information professionals wants to help bridge the gap by providing references and information services to help individual learn and utilize the technologies to which they can still access, regardless of their economic status.
Bullying
Bullying happens everywhere especially in schools where students usually interact with others. Bully means a blustering browbeating person; especially: one habitually cruel to others who are weaker (Merriam Webster). Bullying also can occur through social media called Cyberbullying. It is the electronic posting of mean – spirited messages about a person, relating to the use of computer networks or internet. Cyberbullying spread throughout the world and seems impossible to stop but with the help of others it could be stop but first, we have to discipline ourselves, be responsible enough for what we are going to do. Respecting the views of others also and understanding the situation. Remember the saying, “Don’t do unto others if you don’t want to do unto you”, it means that we have to be aware because in every action it might cause death to others.
Addiction
Many people turn to the internet in order to manage unpleasant feelings such as stress, loneliness, depression and anxiety. When you have a bad day and are looking for a way to escape your problems, the internet can be an easily accessible outlet but some people tends to do too much use of it. For many people, an important aspect of overcoming internet or computer addiction is to find alternate ways to handle these feelings, these may include exercising, meditating, practicing simple relaxation techniques and you may seek your attention to other things like physical activities. Also consider your health in doing the addiction activities because surely it can affect your health.
Promote ethical use of media and information
Media and information literacy is a tool that should be seen as an essential part of the individual, community, organizational, social and economic development process. A social media tool that is very public and so it is important that you consider how what you write and publish online because users have the power to use their rights of free expression but they have to be aware and mindful enough in doing so and be literate enough in using the different media and information for a developing and better society.
Opportunities and challenges of media and information
Fostering certain attitudes towards the media and other information sources involves both being critical of the possible negative effects of the media and a readiness to positively defend the media against possible sources of influence. The first aspect has played a major role in MIL concepts from the UK and the US. Len Masterman (2003) has argued the aim of MIL should be critical autonomy, enabling “students to stand on their own two critical feet.” It enables people to interpret and make informed judgments as users of information and media, as well as to become skillful creators and producers of information and media messages in their own right. The MIL learning capacities prepare students to be 21st Century literate. In general, many students are better networked through the use of technology than most teachers and parents. Teachers and parents may not understand the abilities of technology

Digital Divide According to Margaret Rouse, “Digital Divide refers to the gap between demographics and regions that have access to modern information and communications technology, and those that don't or have restricted access.” This division mostly exists between those who live in cities where technology has already taken over and those who live iEven among populations with some access to technology, the digital divide can be evident in the form of lower-performance computers, lower-speed wireless connections, lower-priced connections such as dial-up, and limited access to subscription-based content.n rural areas which appear to be less industrialized. This reality is problematic because of the different advancements in technology at present.
Bullying Thousands of young people are targets of bullying and cyberbullying every day, putting many at risk for outcomes such as depression or school absenteeism. Bullying happens everywhere. It can happen to an adult, to men and women, and mostly to teenagers. Bullying, especially to teenagers, is a serious public problem. Victims of bullies suffer the psychological consequences all the way until middle age, with higher levels of depression, anxiety and suicide. To stop this, we must be sensitive in everything that we do or say. We must raise awareness towards this problem to better understand its factors and to figure out how we can stop this from happening.
Addiction The word addiction is used in several different ways. Addictive behavior can be related to either physical tolerance or exposure to cues. According to Stanton Pele, “When referring to any kind of addiction, it is important to recognize that its cause is not simply a search for pleasure and that addiction has nothing to do with one's morality or strength of character. Experts debate whether addiction is a "disease" or a true mental illness, whether drug dependence and addiction mean the same thing, and many other aspects of addiction. Such debates are not likely to be resolved soon. But the lack of resolution does not preclude effective treatment. “
Promote ethical use of media and information Social media Websites are increasingly popular research tools. These sites provide new opportunities for researchers, but raise new challenges for Institutional Review Boards that review these research protocols. Digital media ethics deals with the distinct ethical problems, practices and norms of digital news media. Digital news media includes online journalism, blogging, digital photojournalism, citizen journalism and social media. It includes questions about how professional journalism should use this ‘new media’ to research and publish stories, as well as how to use text or images provided by citizens.
Opportunities and Challenges of Media and Information Literacy Media and Information Literacy (MIL) in developing countries is a challenging field of media development today. As a multitude of new digital channels and platforms come into play, new opportunities emerge, but so too do new inequalities and injustices. Not all people have access to these new media. Instead of solving this problem, many governments seek to engage in surveillance of their citizens through the Internet, as large enterprises also try to control the flow of information to further their commercial interests. Many people today struggle to cope with the multitude of options and pitfalls of the digital age. Instead of making active choices, they simply passively consume the entertainment products offered to them. The potential for citizens to coordinate actions and contribute to the quantity and quality of information flow in society is where DMIL goes beyond traditional concepts of MIL.

Media and Information

Digital Divide
Base on my own understanding, digital divide is the gap, split or division between those with and without technology access like computers cellphones, and Internet. This digital divide commonly exist between urban cities and those in rural areas; between professionals and unprofessional; between socioeconomic groups; and, globally, between the more and less industrially developed nations. Separate or different access of technology is quite problematic because of the rise of service such as information needs, which requires access to the internet with the use of different technologies that those who are on the less-served side of digital divide cannot access nor afford. We can combat this digital divide through spreading our knowledge about our gadgets and other things which includes technology to those people who are far from urban areas and for those who don’t have an access to technology.

Digital Addiction
For me addiction is a condition or behavior in which a person or individual suffers a rewarding and reinforcing stimuli despite of the adverse consequences which usually put them to problems causing dangers. Addiction usually or commonly forms when a person is abusing or repeatedly doing a certain act such as playing online games, using drugs and etc. Digital addiction is the addiction in online games or even in social media. We can combat this digital addiction through organizing, limiting and proper use of our own time in playing digital games.

Digital Bullying
Bullying is the use of force and threat to abuse or to intimidate someone by words or actions. This usually happens because of the imbalance social or physical power which leads the bully to be dominant with the others. Digital bullying also known as cyber bullying is the act of harming and harassing with the use of information technology in repeatedly and deliberate manner. Digital bullying or cyber bullying can be prevented by limiting the use of internet or limiting the user’s power to interact with people who are strangers.

Ethical use of Media and Information
Ethical use of Media is the moral correctness of specified conduct in using media. This can happen through displaying or conducting a proper behavior when using Media and Information. One example for this is when someone’s work is used; it is ethical to give a credit to the author or original creator as a sign of respect and citation with his work. Another is the copyright law, even though media such as videos, music and photos are freely displayed on the internet we have to use it carefully and responsibly because it is all protected by copyright that limits us as the users.

Challenges and Opportunities of Digital Media and Information
Media and information helps us to make our life easier. Through the help of it, we can easily get information such as news and data, we can use media in enterprising, and also in advertisements. These opportunities could make our life easy if we use media in a good and right way. Despite the opportunities of media and information there are also challenges on it that could lead us in a wrong path. One of these challenges is the misuse of the real purpose of media and information. Students like me are using media in cyber bullying, plagiarism and even in pornography.

These challenges and opportunities are listed below.

· Shift to digital media- We are challenge to shift in digital media from the traditional media.
· Easy access to the web anytime and anywhere- We have the opportunity to easily access to the web anytime and anywhere.
· Avoiding plagiarism- We are challenge to be a responsible user in terms of using the works of others by crediting their works to them as an author or creator.
· Easily get information such as news- We have the opportunity to easily get information such as news.
· Age- We are challenge to use media and information contents base on our age and understanding.
· Enterprises- We have the opportunity to use media in selling or buying products.
· Advertisements- We have the opportunity to use media in advertising to easily get the attention of the people.

JUSTICE

FOR ANYONE WHO NEEDS IT

A blog by Precious Jade Asumbrado

MY PERSONAL CONTRIBUTION IN:

1. Combating Digital Divide
For me, digital divide exists because of man’s inventions. Digital natives are extending instead of bridging the gap between them and the digital immigrants. It should bot be an issue if everyone has access, skills and proper attitude towards others that are deprived of these things.
Digital divide must be addressed not only by providing one’s self with the latest gadgets, it should be done by being considerate of what others don’t and do have. Because it is through understanding and consideration that this gap between people will be bridged.

2. Combating Digital Addiction
Addiction refers to the poorly controlled urges when it comes to using the technology and the internet. This is very evident in most of the millennial people that are referred to as digital natives. We must learn to control our urges to for the common good. Addiction entails a distressful situation to the digital addict and might affect his relationship to his family, community and other people. This is very destructive to the person if he cannot combat it.
So how can he do that? A person can combat digital addiction by making himself busy with other things. It can be through arts, sports, creative writing and the like. Equipping yourself with other activities will make you more productive rather than staying all-day long in front of your gadget.

3. Combating Bullying
Bullying is an issue which exists not only in schools, but also in the virtual world. Bullies often try to oppress others through the use of their malicious posts, comments or messages. To avoid bullying, one must keep in mind the internet etiquette guide for him to be a technology literate person. He must not use technology for bad purposes.
One of the ways in which a person can avoid bullying is by being mindful about the words in his posts and messages. One can unintentionally bully others, so it is better to avoid it. Another way is by respecting the views and situations of others. Often times, conflicts that result to bullying result from the misunderstanding of two gadget users. They resort to foul language and inappropriate behavior because of the said misunderstanding. So it is essential that we respect others in the virtual world in the way that we also want to be respected.

4. Promoting Ethical Use of MIL
Media and Information literacy is a tool which we can use to effectively anchor productivity and efficiency. Users should be aware that literacy does not only exist on how we use technology. It exists as media literacy, information literacy and technology literacy. We need to be mindful on how we use MIL. We can either be destructive to our self and to others or be educated enough to promote ethics upon using MIL.
To promote the ethical use of MIL, a person must be able to create a wide knowledge about the things that are encompassed by this abbreviation. They must exhibit literacy in terms of media, information and technology. They should be literate enough to know that MIL should be used for the betterment of the society.
So a way which they can use is by sharing my knowledge about MIL to those uneducated beings. Beings everything comes from knowledge.

5. The Opportunities and Challenges of Media and Information
Opportunities, alongside with challenges, exist for MIL. Opportunities, namely occupational, educational, societal and personal are great advances which came from media and information literacy.
Works in our offices, home and society are now done more quickly and more efficiently because of the endless opportunities MIL propose. We can now make reports in a short span of time, view current news real time, and we can also now interact to the current happenings in our society through the different media in which we can channel our opinions. People are now aware of which information is reliable or not. It opens great things such as avoidance of theft, misconduct and plagiarism.
The challenges that MIL encounter are those illiterate persons who are prone to digital bullying, addiction and plagiarism. These people are the real challenge because even though there are literate persons, illiterate persons would still drag MIL to pure dirt because of their skeptical ways which might lead to negative effects to his self or to others. Digital divide, virtual self misuse, spamming, identity theft and intellectual property issues are also challenges of MIL.
